From Пра-Германски *austrą, from Пра-Индо-Европски *h₂ews- (eastern). Cognate with Old Frisian āst, Old Saxon ost, Холандски oost, Old High German ōst, Немачки Osten, Old Norse austr. The Indo-European root is also the source of Латински auster (southerly) and aurora (dawn), Летонски austrumi (easterly), Албански ag (dawn, early morning; black mark round the eyes), Прасловенски *utro.
