Etymology 1

From Средњи Енглески letter, lettre, from Стари Француски letre, from Латински littera (letter of the alphabet"; in plural, "epistle), from Etruscan, from Антички Грчки διφθέρᾱ (diphthérā, tablet). Displaced native Стари Енглески bōcstæf (literally book staff) in sense 1 and ǣrendġewrit (literally message writing) in sense 2. Дублети of diphtheria.
