From Средњи Енглески consonant or consonaunt, from Стари Француски consonant, from Латински cōnsonāns (sounding with), from the prefix con- (with) + the present participle sonāns (sounding), from sonāre (to sound). The Latin is a calque of Антички Грчки σύμφωνον (súmphōnon).
