French[уреди]

Etymology[уреди]

From Средњи Француски abri, from Стари Француски abri (a place where one is sheltered from the elements or harm), from abrier (to cover), itself probably from Латински apricor, apricari, from apricus, or less likely from a Рани Латински abrigare (to cover, shelter), from a- + brigare, from Frankish *berīhan (to cover, protect), from Пра-Германски *bi- (be-) + *wrīhaną (to cover, clothe), from Пра-Индо-Европски *werḱ-, *werǵ- (to twist, weave, tie together). Cognate with Old High German birīhan (to cover), Стари Енглески bewrēon (to cover, enwrap, protect).

Рани Латински abrigare may have also crossed with Old Frankish *bergan (to take care of, protect, hide), from Пра-Германски *berganą (to care for), from Пра-Индо-Европски *bʰergʰ- (to take care), due to similarity in form and meaning[1]. If so, this would relate the word also to Old High German bergan (to shelter) (Немачки bergen) and Стари Енглески beorgan (to save, preserve). More at borrow.
