From Proto-Germanic *-nassuz (“-ness”), alteration (by false division) of -n- (adjective and verbal terminating consonant) + Proto-Germanic *-assuz (“-ness”). Akin to Old Saxon nissi, -nussi, Old High German nissa, -nassi, -nussi, Gothic -𐌹𐌽𐌰𐍃𐍃𐌿𐍃 (-inassus).
