Etymology[uredi]
From Proto-Slavic *sъ(n)-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱom. See Proto-Slavic *sъ(n) for more information. The /n/ persists in snяtь (snjatʹ) (originally a prefixed derivative of яtь (jatʹ, “to take”)), from which other words in -nяtь (-njatʹ) were produced by reanalysis. See also s (s), Old East Slavic sъ (sŭ), and compare the analogous loss of -n- in v- (v-).
