From Средњи Енглески oxe, from Стари Енглески oxa, from Пра-Германски *uhsô (compare Западни Фризијски okse, Холандски os, Немачки Ochse), from Пра-Индо-Европски *uksḗn. Cognate with Велшки ych (ox), Tocharian A ops, Tocharian B okso (draft-ox), Авестански 𐬎𐬑𐬱𐬀𐬥(uxšan, bull), Санскрт उक्षन् (ukṣán).
