Proto-Slavic[уреди]

Etymology[уреди]

According to R. Matasović [1], the word resulted from proto-Indo-European *(s)teg- (to cover) + the medeopassive suffix *-mn̥, with eventual loss of ancient *-g- before -m-. Vasmer alludes a possible origin from *temh₂- (to cut) with cognates Ancient Greek τέμνω (to hew), Latin temnō (to despise), however, this is questionable from a semantic point of view. It also does not explain the long *-ě- in Slavic.
